"WHY BE MORAL? is the book that my father wrote for the world - the book he felt people needed to read. Archie thought philosophy was important in everyday life, not just a subject for scholars." -Ray Bahm |

WHY BE MORAL?
Because this is what you most want to be. Why? Because you naturally want what is best. That is, you want most what is best for your life as a whole. Oughtness consists in the power that an apparently geater good has over an apparently lesser good in compelling our choices. Since you want what is best (the apparently greater good), you ought always want to choose what you most want to choose. Choosing the greatest good is acting as you ought. So acting as you ought is the way that you most want to act. You are naturally ethical. Why? Because eithics is concern for what is good and how to get it. That is why being ethical is what you most want to be. This volume discusses why we are misled about ethics by negativity, codes which restrict, mores operating as taboos, and laws which punish.
